Slow Cooker Red Lentil Dahl (big batch!)

Big Batch in an understatement.

This is BIG, big batch cooking at it’s slow cooked, minimal-preparation-required best!

I like my dahl sweet and FULL of flavour, so I really go to town with the ginger and cinnamon.  Feel free to adapt the quantities of any of the flavourings to suit your taste.

I have a very large slow cooker, so you may need to halve the ingredients if your cooker is smallish.  Still, it will serve at least three families, even when halved!


800g red lentils (rinsed and sorted)

2 onions, chopped

4 garlic cloves, grated

4 teaspoons ground tumeric

4 teaspoons fresh ginger,grated

4 fresh bay leaves

2 cinnamon sticks

4 teaspoons ground cumin

2 teaspoons ground coriander

2 teaspoons yellow mustard seeds

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1.5 litres vegetable stock

2 x 400g tins tomatoes

To serve:  2 teaspoons garam marsala and 80g of Ghee or butter

Slow Cooker Red Lentil Dhal (big batch!)Method:

  1. Put all ingredients into your slow cooker.  Turn it on to LOW and cook for around 4-6 hours.  Check at the 3 hour mark and add more stock if you think it’s needed.
  2. Before serving, stir through the garam marsala and the ghee/butter.

Easily feed 4 -6 families or more as a meal to serve with steamed vegetables and rice.

This meal is suitable to freeze.
