LoadingAdd to recipe box

You just can’t beat the classics sometimes and there is something so nice about a giant meat pie!
For vegetarians or those wanting a meat free meal idea this exact pie can be made using vegetarian mince like Sanitarium; found in supermarket health food aisles, or Quorn found in the supermarket freezer section.

Ingredients

500g beef mince
3 tablespoons beef flavoured gravy powder
1 large brown onion, finely chopped
3/4 cup water
½ cup beef stock
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 large carrot, finely diced
1 zucchini, finely diced
100 grams’ green beans, finely chopped
1 stalk celery, finely chopped
2 sides of a red capsicum, finely diced
1 tablespoon dried thyme
3 sheets puff pastry
sesame seeds
olive oil

Method

  1. In a deep frying pan, heat a little oil.  Throw in the carrot, capsicum, celery, zucchini, green beans, garlic, onion and cook together for approx. 3 minutes or so.
  2. Add in the mince and thyme, stir through for another few minutes until you see the mince is really cooked through and now nice and brown.
  3. Reduce heat and sprinkle in the gravy mix and quickly stir it all through, making sure it does not stick to the pan.
  4. Add in the water, half first then a bit at a time, stirring through.  Pour in beef stock. Stir. If you need to add a little more liquid, then do so now.  Allow to simmer for around 10 minutes on a gentle heat.
  5. Remove from heat.
  6. Grease a deep pie or baking dish that is freezer friendly.  Line with two sheets of pastry, making sure they overlap in the middle, press the pastry together where it meets to make sure it seals. This should make a really good base in your dish and cover most of the sides. Trim off excess pastry and if needed attach to and spaces on the sides, always pressing pastry together wherever it joins.
  7. Pour pie filling on top.  Top with the final sheet of pastry and press edges together so it is all sealed like a pie.
  8. Brush with a little milk and then sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  9. Cover with aluminium foil really, really well and allow to cool a bit and then freeze until needed.
  10. To cook, preheat oven to at 200’c, put into a very hot oven direct from freezer, reduce to 180’c, bake in the oven for approx. 30-40 minutes or until pastry is golden on top and cooked on the bottom.
